A message from our CEO,
With the release of mSecure 6, we made the decision to move to a subscription-based model. We know not everyone is thrilled by this change, but we want to explain why subscriptions are important for the long term success of mSecure – and how they ultimately benefit you. Our goal remains the same: to give you the best possible tools for safeguarding and managing your sensitive information while keeping our business strong and sustainable.
Why Subscriptions? A Look Back
To understand this change, it helps to review the pricing history of mSecure.
- mSecure launched in 2008 as a traditional paid app.
- For seven years, we provided new features and updates for free.
- In 2017, we released mSecure 5 as a one-time paid upgrade, but we didn’t force existing users to pay – it was listed as a “new” app instead of an automatic update.
This was the only time in our history we charged for an upgrade. Even today, many customers still use mSecure 4, though support for that version has ended and it may no longer work properly with future iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac updates.
This history shows why the old model wasn’t sustainable.
Why Not Just Paid Upgrades?
While a one-time paid upgrade sounds appealing, it comes with big problems:
- App Store limitations: Updates often auto-install, and once installed, users can’t roll back. This makes optional paid updates confusing and frustrating.
- User confusion: New versions require sign-ins, data transfers, and add replacements, which always causes issues no matter how simple we try to make it.
- Too many versions to maintain: Releasing separate apps every year would create chaos for customers and impossible workload for out team.
- Friction for customers: People who buy just before an update often feel unfairly treated.
- Feature delays: Paid upgrades force us to hold features until a “big” release, slowing down innovation.
Why Subscriptions Work Better
A subscription model solves these issues and provides real benefits:
- Faster feature releases – No more waiting for yearly updates. We can ship improvements as soon as they are read.
- Consistency – You always get the latest version without hassle.
- Predictable support – Our commitment is at least one quarterly release with bug fixes, quality improvements, and new features.

What This Means for Existing Customers
If you already purchase an mSecure 5 Pro license, you won’t lose access to your current features. You’ll automatically receive an mSecure 6 Essentials account free of charge. That means:
- You keep everything you had before.
- You gain access to a refreshed interface and new features.
- You can choose to upgrade to Premium for extras like record sharing, tagging, and browser plugins.
Even if you decide not to subscribe, your investment is protected. But we hope you’ll see the value in supporting the continued development of mSecure.

Final Thoughts
Moving to a subscription model wasn’t an easy decision, but we believe it’s the best path forward for both mSecure and our customers. Subscriptions allow us to deliver updates faster, improve stability, and ensure mSecure continues to be the most reliable app for protecting your sensitive data.
